Coaching

Unlocking Potential

Coaching has established itself worldwide as a powerful intervention that benefits both individuals and the organisations they work in. Coaching is about helping people to learn rather than teaching them.

Imagine you are offered a way to recognise and realise your goals, to find and utilise your strengths, to manage yourself more effectively, to identify and work around your limitations, to focus your intention and your resources and, above all, to make changes in your life for the better.

That is what coaching has to offer.

In business there are many differing approaches to coaching and the best approach depends on how much genuine ownership you want the coachee to have. At one end of the scale sits instructional coaching where you, the manager, has a clear solution that is relatively fixed – perhaps linked to health & safety legislation. At the other end of the scale sits life coaching where you, the coach, take no ownership for solutions to issues but act as a facilitator.

The coaching manager's dilemma

In our experience, managers have a tendency to keep most of the ownership when they are trying to ‘coach’ others. The result is frequently a thinly disguised tell that ends up de-motivating and even patronising an individual.

The core skills of really effective coaches are great questioning and great listening.
