Challenge Examples
The IT management team from a local authority completed a two day challenge following a series of management development workshops. This ‘blank paper’ challenge resulted in the team partnering with the local mountain rescue team to organise and run a sponsored abseil down the outside of the main office tower block. They persuaded many colleagues to take part in the event, including the deputy chief executive of the council. The fun day event took place several weeks later and several thousand pounds was raised to support the work of the local mountain rescue team.

A functional support group from a global oil business wanted to develop stronger relationships and a more team oriented approach. For operationally critical reasons the group was split into two teams who each undertook different 2 day challenges. The group’s offices were due to relocate and so both teams worked with a community centre that provided a range of services to the soon to be local community.
The first team decorated and refurbished a youth centre that needed a much fresher style and more modern furniture and fittings. Following consultation with the users, a plan was put together and materials sourced and then the team, along with some enlisted volunteers completed the work. The working budget for the project was £10.00
The second team faced a very different challenge. The benefits advice service was being under-utilised by the residents of one particularly challenging estate. Initially team designed a survey and surveyed local residents to try to establish why services were under used. Following analysis of the resulting data, the team discovered many residents were unsure about what help was available and so designed a small brochure to promote the services, got it printed, and door dropped the entire estate. They then presented their findings to the social work team, along with further ideas for action.
